Great news today as VLC media player, commonly known as VLC, the portable, free and open-source, cross-platform media player and streaming media server becomes available in the Tizen Store. VLC media player supports a huge range of audio and video file formats, codecs and streaming protocols, so this is a great addition to the Tizen app ecosystem. We have support for hardware acceleration and subtitles which includes complex text scripts. As promised by the VideoLAN project this is a native VLC app, not a repackaged android app or HTML 5 app, so you can enjoy full performance. Oh it is also open source. Grab it now from the Tizen Store and its only a 9.64MB download.

Today, the SHAREit app has been released in the Tizen Store for the Samsung Z3. SHAREit is a highly requested app by the Tizen community, as it is a fast way for you to share photos, music, and more across devices. It does not use network data or even need you to be on the same WiFi network, now that’s cool ! Share everything with other devices including pictures, videos, music, documents and contacts. SHAREit requires Tizen 2.4 in order to run, so it is not compatible with the Samsung Z1 at the moment. Hopefully we will see a Z1 version after the Tizen 2.4 update. WhatsApp Messenger has been updated to version 2.12.10 (released 31 March 2015) on the Tizen Store, and brings with it the ability to make WhatsApp voice calls. This feature went live for Android users yesterday and it’s great to see Tizen Samsung Z1 users also getting access this so fast. After the update users are now presented with three Tabs for Calls, Contacts, and Contacts. Manual Update You should get a notification to update your WhatsApp application, but if you don’t then do the following to manually check and update: Launch the Tizen Store Select APPS at the top left Select My Apps Select WhatsApp (under updates) Select Update Users in both India and Bangladesh (the countries that the Z1 is on-sale) have confirmed the can access the update. Great news for those who are looking for an alternative for the default pattern lock screen that is in the Tizen phones. Developer Rajesh Bawri and Anup Kushwaha was able to create a pattern lock screen app for Tizen phone. The default Pattern Lock screen by Tizen is using blocks to unlock the screen regardless of where the user start to draw. The Pattern Lock Screen by Rajesh, is more of like the familiar pattern lock screen that we see in Android phone. On the Pattern Lock Screen you have to draw a pattern of 4 or more series on dots on the screen to unlock. If you happen to forgot the correct pattern a back-up pin is available to unlock your phone.

When the Gear S2 first launched, one of the apps that Samsung showed off was the KLM Flight app which unfortunately was not available when it came to release day. Well, now the app has been released on the Tizen Store and can be accessed using the Gear Manager app on your compatible handset. The app has some useful features for some of us that spend a fair bit of time in the sky. You can check your Flight status, Fying blue points (loyalty miles), flight time remaining, Display boarding pass, and Flight gate details. Exactly the type of things us travellers need. Samsung Electronics has announced that Samsung Pay, their mobile payment solution, now supports 50 popular merchant gift cards in a new gift card store. Samsung Pay is currently the most accepted mobile payment system as it works with newer NFC payment terminals and also older MST technologies. The only Tizen device at present that will support Samsung pay, in early 2016, is the Gear S2 which supports NFC method of payment. Samsung Pay allows you to purchase, store, pay with, and share gift cards right from your Samsung phone.
